Spay
A spay is a major surgical procedure. You can help your pet recover and minimize her discomfort by following these recommendations. |

Feeding
Your pet may be fed as usual. |
Incision Care
Gently inspect your pet's incision site daily for signs of redness, swelling, heat, or drainage. Report any changes to Valley View immediately.
Do not allow your pet to lick or chew their incision line. If you are unable to stop her, please bring her to Valley View to be fitted for an e-collar.
Do not bathe your pet for at least 10 days after surgery, or for 24 hours after external suture removal. |
Exercise
For the first week after surgery, restrict exercise to leashed walks only. This restriction is extremely important to prevent swelling of the incision site and tearing of external sutures.
Discourage running and jumping. Confine to a small crate or room, if necessary, to keep her quiet and resting. |
Medication
If your pet is sent home with pain or antibiotic medication, follow the instructions carefully and continue to administer the medication for the full length of the prescription, even if your pet seems to be fine. She may instinctively hide her discomfort. |
Follow-Up Care
We will call you in a day or two to make sure everything is going well. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to call us at (952) 432-9661 with any questions or concerns about your pet's recovery.
If your pet has external sutures, please make an appointment to have them removed in 10-14 days. |
